Zusammenfassung

“Übersetzungsfähigkeit” ist nicht einfach mit translatorischer bzw. fremdsprachlicher Kompetenz gleichzusetzen. Vielmehr muß ein guter Übersetzer auch noch eine ausgeprägte Stilistik und perfekte Grammatikkenntnisse in der jeweiligen Muttersprache, texttyp- und fachspezifisches Wissen, Kenntnisse der Büro- und Sprachtechnologie sowie eine ganze Reihe von “Soft Skills” vorweisen können.  Um diesen Prozess zu fördern und soweit wie möglich zu verkürzen, wurde bei Fry & Bonthrone ein umfassendes, modulares Trainingsprogramm entwickelt.

The objective of this article is to summarize some of the nach obenics presented and discussed at Robin Bonthrone’s session at the 1999 American Translators’ Association Conference in St. Louis (“Mind the GAAP – Translating German Financial Statements”) and the DTT Seminar “Mehrsprachige Terminologie der Rechnungslegung im Vergleich”, held in Cologne in January 2000. It is supplemented by a set of FAQs on issues of translating German financial and accounting, and rounds off with a discussion of future developments in this field.

High-quality translation may be a hard way to make money, but it doesn't mean that it's not a highly rewarding and satisfying way of doing business. Working without these challenges, without this need to continue learning, exploring, and stretching our minds still further, would be boring, dull, and ultimately much more frustrating.

Although quality has become one of the dominant concepts affecting the economies of the developed world, there is still much confusion as to what it actually means, especially in relation to intellectual products and services such as those supplied by the language industry. This paper gives a short overview of classic mainstream thinking on quality, and relates this to terminology and terminology work in particular. Not only does quality have a major role to play in terminology, terminology can also contribute significantly to general and specific quality issues. To do this though, terminologists will have to change their assumptions and ways of working.

The two-volume Final Report of the POINTER project (“Proposals for an Operational Infrastructure for Terminology in Europe”). The aim of the work, which was performed by a consortium of over 40 players and co-funded by the European Commission, was to produce a set of concrete recommendations for the design, development, coordination, and optimization, as appropriate, of a comprehensive framework for terminology work in Europe. Volume I presents the findings and conclusions, while Volume II provides supporting data and more detailed results.

This review of the Langenscheidt/GMS machine translation system T1 Standard 3.0 (German-English) concludes that it is of genuine interest for FYI translation and of some limited value as a productivity tool to language professionals. Other members of the T1 family due to appear shortly look set to offer a further major improvement on this price-performance ratio, basically putting effective MT within the reach of many single translators and small companies. One key issue to be tackled in this context will be the quality of the terminology (both generic and user-supplied) contained in the systems; in addition, more in-depth information and training will be required, which in turn will entail greater support.

Translation memories are now an increasingly accepted part of localization and translation environments, with tens of thousands of licenses sold worldwide. The technology is used, among other things, to leverage identical or similar texts, cutting time to market and ensuring consistency. Up to now, though, users have been locked into proprietary memory formats, making switching databases difficult. The LISA “OSCAR” (Open Standards for Container/Content Allowing Re-use) special interest group aims to develop an industry standard intermediate translation memory exchange format (TMX) with which all vendors can then interface.

Now that even the low end of the language services industry is beginning to wake up to the existence of the Internet, there appears to be some form of unwritten understanding that there are serious benefits to the industry and its players – from leading-edge translation and localization companies down to isolated workaholic freelances – to be derived from “joining” the Internet and actively using the facilities it can provide. But exactly what are these benefits? What is the basis for what must surely be a purely business-driven decision to invest the time and money needed to achieve effective online status? Or is it, in fact, the status element that is uppermost in people’s minds?

Like taxes, the question of translation quality seems to return to haunt us with almost predictable regularity, causing not only chronic headaches, but also what are some of the fiercest and most divisive arguments in the language services industry. This article looks at a number of the issues behind the debate – some of which have little, if anything, to do with translation quality – and attempts to reconcile the different views to produce more balanced proposals for solving the “quality problem”.

The provision of high-quality terminological resources is hampered by the fact that the terminology sector is traditionally fragmented, underpaid, and under-publicized. The question of European terminology structures was addressed in the POINTER Final Report, which recommended, among other things, the foundation of a broad-based user organization, the European Association for Terminology. This article details the POINTER results and the structure and aims of the new association.

Localization service providers at the 1996 LISA Forum – America held near Los Angeles were concerned about the relationship between themselves and computer product developers, costs and margins, localizer/client proximity, and the declining importance of translation. This article examines a number of these issues and concludes that the localization industry is both a sunset and a sunrise industry, able to discard old models whilst simultaneously attempting to meet new challenges.

The nach obenic of industry consolidation featured heavily at the March 1997 LISA Forum – Europe in Mainz, and throughout Vol. VI, No. 2 of the LISA Newsletter. In contrast to the approach taken by many other analysts and industry observers, this article argues that, in reality, there is process of concentration – rather than consolidation – underway in a relatively small segment of the localization industry. Overemphasis on this trend is masking the dynamic expansion occurring elsewhere.
