Deborah Fry
Deborah Fry has an M.A. in Law and Oriental Studies from the University of Cambridge, as well as the Institute of Linguists' Final Diploma in Translation (UK) and the Hesse State translation qualification (“staatliche Prüfung”). A former encyclopedia compiler, technical writer, and press officer as well as a translator, she set up and ran the language services department for a major international software company before forming Fry & Bonthrone Partnerschaft with Robin Bonthrone in 1995. Her specialist translation areas are complex legal/financial texts, management, real estate, and financial and corporate communications. She is a member of the UK Institute of Directors and successfully completed the Amsterdam Institute of Finance’s Summer School. Deborah Fry lectures nationally and internationally on the subject of translation quality, and among other things was a member of the DIN NAT 3.1 Subcommittee that produced the former German DIN 2345 Translation Contracts standard. A past officer and founder member of a number of German and European terminology associations, she was project manager for the German contribution to the European project “Proposals for an Operational Terminology Infrastructure for Europe” (POINTER) LRE-63090 (1996), and responsible for producing the project’s final report. She also edited the LISA (Localisation Industry Standards Association) newsletter for several years.
Robin Bonthrone
Robin Bonthrone has a degree in Modern Languages and a postgraduate diploma in European Marketing. After holding positions in sales and marketing management at German and British companies, he worked as an independent consultant, translator, and localizer before forming Fry & Bonthrone. He specializes in highly complex financial texts, focusing in particular on comparative and contrastive international financial accounting and reporting, and lectures regularly in Europe and the US on this and other translation-related topics. From 2003 to 2006, Robin Bonthrone was joint coordinator of the German version of IASs/IFRSs on behalf of the International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation (IASCF). He is also a member of XBRL Deutschland e.V., the German XBRL jurisdiction, where he works on bilingual taxonomy projects for German GAAP and IFRSs. His German-English-German “Dictionary of Economic and Monetary Union” was published by Langenscheidt Fachverlag in February 1999. Published translations include Fey/Fladt "Deutsches Bilanzrecht/German Accounting Legislation", books on EMU monetary policy instruments and financial market drift by Prof. Lukas Menkhoff, and four chapters of the Bundesbank Festschrift “Fifty Years of the Deutsche Mark” (OUP, January 1999).
